The Office of Marketing and Communications at Drake University was responsible for designing the Buy Fresh, Buy Local newsletter for Des Moines as a faculty member on campus had a vested interest in that program. The Buy Fresh, Buy Local Newsletter was always extremely tough to design because the information from the farms included in the newsletter was self-reported, and often was delivered to us at the last minute. Usually this piece was redesigned at least once during the process to make room for late information. By 2011, I had designed this newsletter four times, so I planned ahead and left extra space in areas that often had late information, knowing that I could add photos or illustrations if the information did not come. In addition, I had a talented illustrator as an intern that year, so I commissioned him to create symbols to signify what type of items may be found at each farm. Finally, I updated the template for future designers as the old template was not put together for intuitive use.
