easy peasy and cheap decor

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

It’s been a while since I made anything, so I decided to make a few things last night.

I haven’t had much of a chance to unpack since the move, and thus, not much of a chance to decorate. I bought some vintage (or at least used) frames from Salvation Army for 99 cents a while back and they’ve just been sitting around waiting for me to do something crafty with them.

So I did.

Nothing super exciting.

I rummaged through my fabric that I’ve been hoarding and found a really cute print from Echino that pretty much matches my bedroom decor perfectly. 10 minutes later, I had a cute framed print.

Easy.

All you need is a frame, a piece of fabric and some masking tape. Cut the fabric about a half inch bigger than the opening of the middle of the frame. Take masking tape and adhere the edges so the fabric is taut. Ta. Da.

As you can see by the back of my frame, I didn’t really measure anything. Seriously. It doesn’t get easier than this. Just make sure you’ve ironed your fabric.

Ta da! If you want to get super fancy and put a piece like this to use, you could use a more permanent adhesive (like hot or super glue) and hang earrings and use stick pins to hang necklaces.  But I like this, because I can easily change out the fabric and I can even use the piece of fabric for something else if I choose.

Here it is in my bedroom. Totally cute!

things I didn’t buy at the antique shop

I went to the Brass Armadillo last night in Des Moines. Yes. I have no money left this month…but I bought more ceramics in preparation for next week’s Market Day bazaar next Saturday.  I figure it’s a good investment as long as I get a few sales out of the deal.

Anyway, here’s a greatest hits of my antiquing adventure last night.  I was on a speed shopping trip, only looking for a specific thing, so I probably missed a bunch of stuff.

This is probably one of the creepiest dolls I've ever seen.

This is pretty fantastic. Bionic Woman lunchbox. I want one!

Okay guys...I'm going back and getting this tonight I swear. Okay. Maybe not. I'll e-bay it. It wasn't in the best condition...and besides, I wasn't sure if I had this one or not (I don't — I just checked). She's my favorite care bear, so I assumed I did...I have the new version (several in fact). Anybody who wants to make my day and spend 10 bucks...be my guest. :)

I didn't look at the price on this, but it's the same pillow pal that DJ had on Full House. I used to have one of these guys, but not this one. If I find the one I had, I'm totally getting it.

Market Day!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009
I’ll be participating in a craft/art/thrift bazaar next Saturday. I’ll be selling my ceramics, some vintage and handmade clothing, and some craft supplies. I know it’s a Saturday…and it’s kinda early (for some of you folks), but I’d love to see some peeps at the show.

Here are the details:

Market Day launches May 30
Farmer’s market die-hards and thrift-conscious art lovers are invited to a new kind of market debuting May 30.Market Street Media Foundry is hosting a casual, monthly bazaar for art, vintage, found items and handmade goods. Dubbed “Market Day” artists and vendors are encouraged to look beyond what they traditionally retail and bring a fun and inexpensive mix of items.

There will be dozens of artists and craftsters selling their wares in addition to thrift furniture items from Racoon Forks Trading Company and Mike Kinter.

Like a farmer’s market, patrons are encouraged to bring cash and shopping bags, though some individual vendors may accept credit cards and provide bags and packaging for larger items.

Market Day is the last Saturday of every month May 30 through September 26 with special dates in October and November. It will run from 9am-2pm. Market Day is located in the 120 year old Market Building at 118 SE 4th Street.
