a non-MJ-related post

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

yay for those of you that aren’t big MJ fans (which includes, as I’m finding out, a LOT more of you than I thought).

So I was so wrapped up with being upset about MJ *still* the other day when I ran that I totally didn’t blog about my awesome run.  Yeah, I’ll go ahead and say that I was running for him, in my mind, because it kept me going.  I used to listen to some of his stuff when I ran, but recently only have listened to heavy stuff when running. I can’t believe I could switch at the drop of a hat like that (in this case, the drop of a glittered black fedora hat).

Anyway, due to the fact I was running with purpose and that my mind was definitely elsewhere AND the fact that it was 20° cooler and not deathly humid out, I was able to complete my 45 minutes of running without stopping.  Well — obviously I had to stop at intersections, but I don’t count that because that’s a life-or-death kind of situation. Not stopping=getting plowed by a vehicle.

So this is my longest non-stop run since physical therapy!

Also — I set out to do a JOG…not a run. I had Mexican for lunch (which is a terrible idea for someone with stomach issues, I know), so there was a fiesta going on in my tummy.  I decided I should just risk it and go because it was so nice outside. Lo and behold, I didn’t have any issues. Crazy, right? Yeah. I know.

Oh and nikeplus.com has a new look/layout/functionality.  Not a fan just yet.  We’ll see if it grows on me.  OH and apparently I’m “chimes1″ on nikeplus now … WTF??? I’m THE chimes.

7.1.09 Run

waiting for a large file to save.

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Yeah. I’m at work. I’m waiting for a rather large file to save…so sue me. I don’t have much else to work on today, so I’m taking a 5-minute blogging break.

AND GO!

I realized today that I haven’t updated about my running injury lately (new blog followers: I ran a marathon last year, hurt myself, but continued to run a ridiculous amount for months following — just finished physical therapy in May).

My hip is doing a lot better, but it probably could be even better if I spent as much time stretching/strength training as I should … truth be told, those activities don’t burn many calories, so unfortunately, they’re always going to be last on my list.  I’ve been doing a lot better at them though — 20 mins a day devoted to stretching… that’s kind of a lot.

I still have an issue with pain when driving or sitting for an extended period of time. I’ve modified a lot of my daily activities to be done standing up … but am I supposed to go through life never sitting?  I’m really just avoiding the issue rather than making it better.  I don’t know. I’m probably always going to have problems.  I wish it would just go away, but really, it hasn’t even been a year since the injury really flared up … so being able to run 2 miles at this point without pain is a lot to ask.

speaking of  — I’m up to 2 miles again — or 20 minutes, which is more like 2.25ish.  That’s nothing compared to the numbers I was pulling daily last year at this time (7-10 on weekdays and 12-15 on weekends) … but that’s okay. progress is progress. I’ll never run another marathon (it’s kind of a pain in the ass… really?  yeah.), but I hope to do a half marathon again AND kick up my speed a lot.

Anyway, my 5 minutes is definitely up.  That’s all for now!

The (beavis and butthead) swimming experience

Monday, April 6th, 2009

FYI I started writing this yesterday afternoon (4/6/09).

So to keep myself busy for 12 minutes on this bike I’m bloggig from my iPod.

Read: yay! A short entry!

So now that i’m well on my way to recovery, I finally made myself go out and buy swimming gear and go for a dip.

Got a pink (what else?) swim cap and goggles and a plain black one piece. I was ready to go.

Problem: how do I put on a swim cap?
Solution: ask a random girl with wet hair in the locker room — she’s a swimmer.

Apparently putting on a swim cap is harder than it looks. She showed me and 15 minutes later I was ready to figure out my goggles.

So 20 minutes later I made it in the pool. And, sadly, I had iPod withdrawl.

And lo and behold, swimming isn’t as easy as I remember. My stroke: breast stroke. Can’t do it. No frog kicking allowed during my rehab. Ok well um what else can I kinda do? Side stroke… Check. Freestyle… Check. Dog paddle? Mega check.

I alternated those few “strokes” for a half hour and went to the deep end to water jog and tread water for a while.

Then I went into the locker room to shower off — the guys’ locker room! Oh boy. Sadly I didn’t realize it right away. Only after I discovered my clothes weren’t where I left them did I realize there were men walking around.

Sooo I bolted. Into the right locker room his time. Shoot. Forgot my towel. Ran back out to get that and reminded the lifeguards that I’m not a swimmer… just a poor injured runner that has no business in the pool.

I snagged my towel, went into the LADIES locker room, showered off and started changing. The naked older lady next to me started talking to me (or maybe I started talking to her? I don’t know). We had a convo while we changed (and yes, I got naked in the locker room).  THEN I realized my underwear were missing. Which wouldn’t be a big deal except I JUST CAME FROM WORK!

Frantically, I dumped my bag fearing that my underwear were somewhere on the 3rd floor of Old Main … or even worse … on the 2nd floor (that’s where the president’s office is!).

FOUND ‘em!  That was kinda scary.

Anyway, after a very interesting experience… I went off and started biking. Wet hair and all.

Swimming=fun, but awkward … my body=tired.  This morning I felt like I ran 10 miles…except without the “my appendages are going to break off at any moment” feeling.

yay.  Hoping to swim tomorrow. I dunno tho.  I stayed home from work today because I felt reallly…. off.  I guess. I felt like crap when I woke up and continued to feel like crap all day. So here I am. in sweatpants. 6 PM and no shower today. I rule.

home for T-day

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

i’m home for thanksgiving and that usually means logging a ton of miles on gravel with lotsa hills.

not with this stupid knee injury it doesn’t.

5 miles today on gravel.  no hills. definitely wore the spandex getup. i’m sure that started some sort of rumor around town (maybe i’m pregnant now? nope, sorry folks, that’s just all the baked goods i’ve been making and eating).  I’ll be anxious to hear.

i totally forgot i thought about doing that turkey trot tomorrow in DBQ, and I really shouldn’t run tomorrow cuz that’s 3 days in a row and 2 days in a row is currently pushing it. hallooooow elliptical machine in the basement and a video of slipknot live (cuz really, i honestly don’t have any other live dvds).

OOOH i almost forgot. today’s run pushed me over my goal of 5x runs in under 9:34/mi. way to go, chica. pat on the back. srsly. last month I didn’t think I could hit a 9:00 mile, and now I’m running nearly 8 minute miles. rockin.

PR city.

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

yay. finally got that last workout to load.

i rock.

which totally reminds me — on Saturday I ran down Grand Ave. and went past a car with a hilarious license plate: MANIROK. (man i rock)

MANIROK’s entire front end was smashed in…like the owner rammed it aimlessly into a pole. MANILAUGHED.

anyway… today’s run= 2 PRs.  Mile time and 5K time. Probably not the fastest mile I’ve ran in my life, but the fastest since I’ve gotten the Nike+.

Also, I’d set a goal to run 5 times at under 9:35/mi pace in a month.  I’m well ahead of that goal, which I was not anticipating.

srsly annoyed w/ nike+

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

today I had an amazingly short but awesome run — set 2 PRs: 8:06/mi and 26:03/5k.

— but —

NIKE PLUS DECIDED NOT TO RECORD THIS INFO!!!  It’s on my iPod, but the workout data from today decided for whatever reason that it did not want to send to nikeplus.com. GRR.

the last two weeks I’ve been watching my average pace per mile on nikeplus.com go from a sad 10:45ish to a little less embarrassing 10:25ish.  Mind you, the 10:45/mi pace was built up over nearly 300 miles and the amount of miles I’ve ran in the past two weeks barely add up to 30, let alone 300.

a month ago i didn’t think i could hit a 9:00 mile.  now i’m running those regularly for 5mi< runs. the most i’ve run since the marathon tho is 6 miles, which is sad, but i’ve got an injury, so i’ll deal with it so i can keep running for years rather than months.

anyway. annoyed. i was pretty proud of those times even tho they’re seriously slow compared to most people and nike+ apparently agreed. grr.
