After so many moves to different apartments I’ve decided that it’s high time I ditch some of my junk. First and foremost — those 10 giant photo albums from high school.

THE TIME BEFORE FACEBOOK.

And the time well-before Facebook albums. That’s right. I was there at the dawn of Facebook when you could only have ONE profile photo. Yes. ONE.

Anywho, I now present to you the ever-important FIRST PROM I EVER ATTENDED: Prom 2000. A prom for the new millennium. Actually I have no idea what the theme was, but I’m sure it was fantabulous. Especially because I was oh-so-cool as a sophomore going to prom.

I apologize in advance for the amount of hair gel and rolls of bangs. And the fact that I didn’t label any of these pix. Quite frankly if you were there you remember it and will giggle and if you weren’t there you’ll giggle without the pertinents.

And note that my friends and I (specifically most of the male friends featured in these photos) were the Magic the Gathering-playing types in high school. In case you couldn’t tell from the photos.

It’s Sunday after prom and I am spent. Had myself some blueberry banana pancakes and bacon and now am doing some laundry.

Prom — for those of you who don’t know — is not high school prom. Prom in Ames is an awesomely fun night of dancing, drinking and debauchery in which we get dressed up like jackasses and dance our butts off for charity. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

This year’s theme was Party on Bourbon Street: Prom Gone Wild.  So I finally got to wear this masterpiece of sequins and tulle. I painted a mask on as well because there was no way I was going to carry a mask around all night.

Are you ready for this awesomeness?

Every year Ames has a throwback prom to raise money for American Cancer Society and this year’s theme was Night of the Living Prom. Zombies. Prom. Zombies. Prom. Prombies?

Of course, I had to cram myself into this awesome black dress I bought for last year’s prom that isn’t made to actually fit a human being. It’s a size … ?? I don’t know. 28 inch waist with 24 inches for a chest? Hmm.. yeah. I turned the back into the corset and laced it up to fit me. Frankensteined a dress for zombie prom.

Mark and I decided to do 80s glam punk — Billy Idol style. I made Mark a shirt out of a PBR t-shirt and some fabric scraps. And of course, I made us a corsage and a boutonniere.

It was a good mix of zombies and prom goers. We had a fabulous time. The band showed up in Ghostbusters costumes (complete with proton packs) and played the ghostbusters song! Thriller was played halfway through the night and a group of us danced to it. I didn’t learn it, but I jumped in and improved anyway.

That’s about it. Free beer and punch. Lots of dancing. Lots of fun times. Undead. And alive.

Once again I’m attending the fabulous charity prom put on by Sigler Companies in Ames.  This year’s theme is Night of the Living Prom.  So, you can go as a zombie or as whatever you want. So really, the only difference from last year is the zombie part. Last year’s theme was Revenge of the Prom.

Anyway, Mark is going with me and I kind of fed his ideas for what he was going to wear and let them snowball into something really cool.  So originally he was wanting to wear an old-school tuxedo t-shirt with weight-lifting gloves and a jacket, but I suggested we go to the Atomic Garage in Valley Junction to see if they had any cool vintage attire.  There, we found an epic PBR t-shirt, which is perfect because him and all my guy friends are notorious for drinking PBR since it’s the cheapest pitcher you can get. But it was too small. I bought it anyway assuming I could craft it into something.

Today I tried on my black dress that I’d bought last year that has never quite fit (it tapers to the top — which makes no sense, but whatever).  I decided that it was too cute with the electric blue and black lace tights I had on and that I HAD to make it work.  Coincidentally, at the same time I tried the dress on, I got a text from Mark saying that he was going to tuck his jeans into his boots, old-school punk style.

*idea!*

So we’re going punk.

I’m going to add a hook and eye closure where the zipper stops zipping on the dress, and add loops so I can lace the rest of it up like a corset so it will fit.  There’s only about 6 inches where it won’t zip, but I figured it’d be an easy fix and I won’t have to take the zipper out to do it, so if by some miracle of God or if I lose some ribs then MAYBE it will fit someday and I can un-frankenstein it up.

The PBR shirt is getting cut up and patched onto a charcoal grey t-shirt along with some electric blue accent fabric.  Also — safety pins.  He’s wearing the gloves and jacket along with the tucked in jeans. It’s going to be awesome.

I already made the corsage and boutonniere for the event, including some awesome houndstooth fabric, sequins and of course, safety pins, with a little bit of electric blue ribbon. AWESOME.  I hope it’s not too girly for him to wear.

So in honor of my favorite celeb, this year’s prom theme is Night of the Living Prom. Well, not sure if it’s in honor of him, but either way, we’re learning the Thriller dance so most people can do it and it will be awesome.

In case you forgot, Prom is a charity event in Ames that is held every year.  It’s a throwback prom with a cool theme. Last year’s was Revenge of the Prom.

Anyway, last weekend they held a group practice to learn the dance, but I went home for the weekend to introduce Mark to my family (which went really well, BTW).  So, needless to say, this uncoordinated chica must learn this thing on her own.

So, I began.

And, I’m going to be videoing my progress and blogging about it that way I actually get this thing learned so I don’t look like a tool and so I can pay homage to the King like I always wanted to. Plus, life isn’t complete until you know how to dance like a zombie.

I’m totally lazy so I’m just going to literally copy and paste what I just posted on crafster.org. also, i want ice cream…so I’m going to make this quick.

I made some corsages tonight for Kelly and I to wear tomorrow night at Revenge of the Prom.

Fancy.

We have totally awesome dresses from our rad 80′s new years party and thought we could get a 2nd use out of them and get another chance to wear some big hair and side ponytails. 

I ventured to Hobby Lobby and got a bunch of supplies (flower stems happened to be on sale for 50% off!)….roses, beads, black tulle with glitter, elastic, hot glue gun, floral shears and some floral tape.

Here’s what I ended up with after a half hour of tinkering:

I figured out where I wanted the roses to set and I taped them with floral tape (which, by the way, is kind of rough to use if you’ve never used it before–it sticks to itself, but don’t pull too hard or it’s going to break!).  Then I cut the bottoms off with the shears and wrapped the wire parts with floral tape so they wouldn’t poke me. I bent the stem I created by taping in half and moved the flowers around a bit to figure out how they would look on my wrist.  Then I glued some leaves in (there weren’t any leaves that close to the flower, so I pulled them off and placed them).  I took some of the black tulle and kind of balled it up and glued that to the bottom of the whole thing.  Then I took a strip of elastic (that I measured around my wrist), sewed it together so it was secure, and sewed it to the bottom of the corsage-in-the-works.  THEN I glued it down to make sure it would stay.

Exciting.  Not exactly rocket science, but it was fun to pick up something I don’t normally do. I’m usually on the knitting board or lurking on the cooking board.

Also, I plan to post some action shots of the corsages at the event after it happens. I’m EXCITED!

FINALLY.

Lack of internet kinda hurts my blogging. In the next few months I’m going to decide between internet and cable or an iPhone. I’m thinking the iPhone will win since I don’t watch much TV and if I reaaaalllly need to blog I can go to Mars Cafe, to the library or do it over lunch at work.

anywho… Kelly posted pics from the awesome totally 80s NYE party.  And they’re awesome.  I need to buy a point and shoot camera, but I’m trying to revamp my budget right now to allow for an iPhone or internet/cable.

Okay no more mentions of budgets or iPhones. BLOGGING.

The party was pretty fun, but as per usual we kind of petered out around 11 PM. I went to Kelly’s to help setup. While she was cleaning, I put up the backdrop for the “official” prom photos.

Kelly got most of that fabric from work...blue tulle was from Senior Portfolio night almost 2 years ago.

Anyway, backdrop was awesome.  Kelly and I started getting ready. Since I recently just chopped off my hair, my hair style consisted of me flipping my head upside down and spraying the living bejesus out of a can of hairspray all over it.  Kelly opted for a side pony with the same treatment and some crimping.  I overdid our eyeshadow (Maria’s BF, Marty, said Kelly’s looked “postapocolyptic”…like Mad Max style)…I think we both ended up with 4-5 shades of eyeshadow and some black eyeliner. Awesomeness.

People starting arriving and changing into their attire… with exception of Meredith who was literally sewn into her dress because somebody had been sewn in and cut out of it previously.  Awesome.  Oh, and Maria came already dressed because that’s how she rolls.   Carol had 2 dresses so she did photos in both, as did I.  Although, I couldn’t quite zip the one dress (and by couldn’t quite, I mean there was a 4-inch gap).

Anyway, party ensued. Everybody mixed their drinks and I did 4 shots of tequila rose (I feel like I’ve mentioned that before…I’m not a big drinker, so I guess I’m proud). Kelly and I opened a bottle of raspberry wine, which wasn’t very good…so she opened her one of 2 bottles of her favorite wine and we each had a glass of that.  I had a glass of champagne around midnight and spilled some of each of my drinks on my dress (which now needs to be dry cleaned).

Most of the night was spent arguing over whether Carol should move to Iowa or Texas. I think Iowa, but hell, I’d love to move to TX myself where it’s warm most of the year and where I can wear my hair as big as I please all year round…oh and drive a friggin’ truck.

Anyway, good times had by all. Music was good.  Friends were great. I even got a kiss at midnight.  Reluctantly by the boyfriend since he’s super allergic to felines and Kelly’s apartment still had a layer of cat fur embedded after vacuuming..so it was kind of a snotty New Year’s kiss. Oh well. I was drunk, so I didn’t care.
