Happy Fathers Day!

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Happy Fathers Day to my Dad who will probably never read this because I’m still very proud of him for being able to turn a computer on and fumble his way around a cell phone.

My dad is the infamous Calvin Himes (chimes sr.). Who, up until recently, drove around in a little yellow 1989 Ford Festiva with lightening bolts on the side.  Everybody in town (Monticello — around 3500 people) knew that as the Calvinmobile.

In his lifetime he’s run more miles than I probably ever will — and he had to quit running when he was 45 because of knee surgery.  Which ultimately inspired me to keep running further, although much, MUCH slower. And resulted in my running a marathon*.  My half marathon PR is 1:46, my dads: 1:08 — or so he claims. It seems that his race times keep getting faster and faster each time I’ve asked over the years.

My dad is also a hardcore underdog sports team fan. Chicago Bears and the San Francisco Giants.  Although, writing this post this year doesn’t do those teams as much justice as far as their underdog status goes.  Either way, I would have to say that at least 90% of my dad’s wardrobe is orange and navy.

Mom scanned some oldies in for me, so I thought I would share.

Dad and me at Wacky Waters probably in 1986

Dad and me playing in my kiddie pool outside our trailor, also probably 1986. Look at those amazing shorts. And my amazing haircut (thanks MOM!)

The dadstache — not as awesome when not paired with the redfro that went with it before I was born (mom couldn’t find any of those). This was in 1988 when my sister was born. Again, thanks, mom, for the haircut.  When the heck did I have straight hair?!

And since everybody was posting photos of their dads on Facebook, I took this ample opportunity to steal a lovely photo of both sets of my grandparents from my mom and my aunt.

Below is my dad’s parents. I don’t know whose wedding this was at (mom and Dad or my aunt Sheila’s most likely judging by the attire).  Both of them have long passed away — my grandma in 1991 and my grandpa in 2006.  But we still make my grandma’s recipe for sugar cookies every year.  She had the best frosted sugar cookies.  And come to think of it, I’m guessing that’s where my sweet tooth comes from.  I have a recipe book that my aunt Sheila put together and it’s like 35 pages and it’s all desserts, cookies, bars and frostings. Six pages of frostings alone! Which is probably why there is a small container of frosting in the freezer RIGHT NOW that I whipped up to have a spoonful of when I need a sugar fix.

My mom’s parents — who are both still around, but my grandma is only sometimes around. She’s got Alzheimers and has been in a senior community for a few years now. Sometimes she’s still able to hold a conversation, but doesn’t understand much, but other times it’s like she’s long gone.  It’s been really hard to watch, and I wouldn’t wish Alzheimers on anybody.  Which is another reason I’m such a health freak — trying to stave off brain issues as well as health issues that run on both sides of my family.

I think this photo must have been from the mid-eighties — judging by the awesome glasses.

*which, btw, I’m thinking of walking one to see if I can beat my run time because I was injured and I ended up with an embarrassing 13.5ish mile pace. Which is my walk speed.

Wonder-Bred Italian Boy Cooks: Turkey Burgers and Coleslaw

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

In the search for fun, easy and healthy summer recipes, I came across Greek turkey burgers from Iowa Girl Eats. I’ve been wanting to try these for a while — and, bonus — you can make a bunch of patties ahead of time and freeze them for later use.

In the mix for turkey burgers (IGE’s original recipe):

  • 1lb 99% fat-free, lean turkey breast
  • ~3/4 package frozen spinach, thawed and excess water squeezed out
  • ~1/4 cup feta cheese
  • ~8 sundried tomatoes, hydrated and chopped
  • 1/4 cup red onion, minced
  • salt, pepper, dried oregano & dried thyme
  • to this we added 2 cloves of garlic

We also made coleslaw to go with. I used this recipe from Real Simple, but used red cabbage instead of regular cabbage. We added extra green onions and skimped on the raisins.

Patty action — and did I mention that we found a Fonzie tumbler at a local antique shop?  A-mazing! It’s our most coveted possession. And now Mark has a glass to use when I use my Care Bear glasses.

These need to cook at a lower heat to make sure the turkey gets done and not burnt on the outside and undone in the middle.

Mark doing his best Fonzie impression.

And the finished product — with piña coladas.  Awesome! We now make these turkey burgers about once a week.

How I spent my weekend

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Just so you know, this is pretty much how I spend EVERY weekend. Wearing big earrings. Putting on a lot of eyeshadow. Making cute faces.

Geeky (but awesome) Monday Surprise

Monday, May 9th, 2011

I was out of the office a few days last week so I didn’t receive this lovely package from Amy Palanjian (the editor of ReadyMade magazine for those who aren’t familiar) until today.

Amy follows me on Pinterest and noticed that I had pinned this amazing book, “World of Geek Crafts” and promptly messaged me asking if I wanted her copy that was sitting on her desk.

Why, yes. Yes I do!

So she stuck it in snail mail, and I got it TODAY.

Guess what the first thing I’m going to make is? Betcha can’t guess …

It’s a Buffy portrait. Made from beads. Can’t decide if I want to anty up time or money — because this would make a GREAT x-stitch, but I feel that would take up too much time. But it would be awesome.

Also, I didn’t realize this until now, but I was featured on the Geek Craft blog a LONG time ago (2009) — when it first started. My lovely rubiks cube that I made for my then-BF, Kasey, was featured.

What’s in My Netflix Queue: British Comedies

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Loving all the selections on Netflix right now. Mark got me into British TV. So now I have a TON in my queue.

  1. The IT Crowd: Non-computer-savvy, Jen, finds herself managing two super-geeks in the dungeons of a corporation run by a sexually-charged buffoon.
  2. Pulling: Newly-single after ditching her boring fiancé very near her wedding day, Donna moves in with her two girlfriends and ends up in a lot of crazy single lady adventures.
  3. Red Dwarf: A radiation leak on the Red Dwarf kills everybody but Dave Lister and his pregnant cat, but leaves Lister in suspended animation for years. Dave awakes to find his cat has evolved into a Prince (the musician)-like creature and that his former annoying roommate is now a hologram.

Weird Personality Test

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

My friend Matt found this really odd personality test while stumbling online the other day. There are no language cues. Just weird shapes. You have to pick A or B on all of them. And it’s so weird because all three of my friends that took it had analysis that pretty much fit them to a T.

Here is mine:
Fond of tradition, but attached more to the joy of human interaction, you are often a beacon of hope to those members of society who have lost faith or who are in need of succor. You are often emotional, and this emotionality is rarely held in check. Kind and helping by nature, when affronted you will explode, and just as suddenly when the pain has passed return to normalcy again. On occasion this quick and vibrant emotionality is translated into a life on the stage or screen. You have a strong sense of right and wrong, but can sometimes be left confused and uncertain in times of stress or when tough decisions must be made. You avoid conflict, tending to stay out of trouble in hopes that the group will benefit most from this behavior. Because you have trouble putting your own needs first, you will be put in much stress if you find yourself in an unequal relationship, one in which your partner is not as giving as you are.

Curious? Take the test and when you get your results, post them! Or e-mail me.

New Digs

Monday, March 21st, 2011

I just spent all of last week MOVING. Again. I know.

The house I was living in sold, so I was given 30 days to skedaddle. Moved in with my boyfriend and his roommate (who I was planning on moving in with ANYWAY come August) and now we have a pretty sweet setup.

I’m not going to post pictures of their place before. They would be forever ashamed. But here’s what we’ve got going now. Also I have to point out that we have like 11 game systems between the 3 of us. Yeah. It’s pathetic.

After combining pillows, we have ELEVEN pillows on our bed. There is no room for people. Or a dog. The good news is that since Mark’s bed is a full size, we can build the pillows up on the side to make it a queen. Kidding. But seriously. Also, we’re thinking of painting his red and blue furniture a more grown-up color … like a taupe, black or brown.

Girlie stuff + boy stuff. And I now have access to my all-in-one printer. It was on the tippy top of my desk before and I didn’t use it at ALL in my last place. My summer project (amongst many) is to scan in all of my photo albums and digitally archive them so I don’t have to cart them around with me for EVERY move. You know what that means? More installments of Time Warp Saturday.

Um. Our kitchen is awesome. Just saying. By some strange coincidence Mark and I had the same set of canisters, so now we’ve got tons of stuff all canistered-up. On the stove is this month’s batch of Mark’s marinara sauce.

And more kitchen. In the crock pot is a pot roast experiment. If successful, I will blog about it. On the wall: artwork by Kim Kullmer.

So that’s about it. For the next 4-5 months anyway. We are moving on July 31 to our new 3-bedroom and I get my doggie back. (BTW I did not mention that Barney is with my parents because we can’t have animals here)

Best of Borders

Monday, February 14th, 2011

My friend Meredith recently made a trip to Iowa from Texas for work and we went out for dinner with a couple of our other girlfriends and hopped over to Borders.

There we found two of the most amazing books. Ever.

Because regular Pirates aren’t that popular anymore.

I’m a hu-a-hun-a-hungry for some heart-attack inducing food.

Sweet Tunes Thursday: Bright Eyes (The People’s Key)

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

I love when I find out that a band that has broken up, been defunct or has otherwise just not been around is releasing an album. Bright Eyes is going back to his old sound (so no folk, folks) and releasing a new album called The People’s Key on February 15. YAY!

You can download the first track, “Shell Games”, for free and preorder the album off Saddle Creek’s website.

If you’re super impatient, here’s a video of the new song. The term “video” is used loosely as it’s just a still image of the album cover with the song.
