Dogs are weird.

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010Barney’s Des Moines Adventure!
Thursday, June 17th, 2010Last Sunday, Mark, Barney and I went to Des Moines. I had a coffee table that was sitting out for me at work that I needed to pick up and I needed Mark’s car to retrieve it. So, we decided to take Barney so we could get him an ice cream cone at Snookies Malt Shop. For those of you who don’t know, Snookies is a really great malt shop in the Beaverdale neighborhood in Des Moines and they love dogs. So, they hand out little doggie-sized ice cream cones along with people’s ice cream treats.
Barney was surprisingly good on the walk around the lake. He met a few other doggies and behaved himself. He also met a few little kids. So, all in all, he was very deserving of the ice cream cone he was going to get.
He was also a little apprehensive of the car ride. I’m guessing because every other time he’s been in a longer car ride the poor dog got dropped off at a new home. I’m his 3rd home — 4th, if you count the brief stint with my parents (which I’m sure he does). Anyway, he started enjoying it when I rolled down the window and let him hang out a bit (don’t worry guys, he had his harness on and I had a vice grip on both him and his leash).
We made it to the malt shop and Mark and I ordered. I got Barney his cone and sat down with him. To my surprise, he didn’t eat it all in one bite like my old dachshund* would have. He licked it! Like a person! He didn’t eat the cone part — apparently he didn’t consider that part food (this is coming from somebody who sometimes eats poo).
After he finished his cone, he sat around waiting patiently to see if there was going to be any more. Nope. Not sharing. I got a brownie sundae with hot fudge and marshmallow, and Mark got a Heath not-sure-what-they-call-it-there-but-is-essentially-a-Blizzard (TM).
*side note — my old doxie (Jake the Snake) was famous for his eating feats. I don’t have all day to tell you the stories, but my favorite has to do with ice cream. My mom was scooping ice cream for a birthday party or something, and it was a particularly frozen hard batch. She scooped really hard, and the scoop of ice cream flew off the ice cream scooper. Jake just happened to be walking by and snatched the WHOLE SCOOP of ice cream on the way. It didn’t even hit the ground. It. Was. Epic. That dog ate EVERYTHING and lived to be almost 15.
In case you’re curious … since I got off on the tangent … here’s some pictures of Jake.
He was rather rotund here. I’m guessing this was when he was about twelve.
My papasan chair was one of his favorite places to snuggle up under a blanket. He would usually play musical beds/chairs all day long and find interesting places to nap.
For instance, on my pillow, covered up in my blanket. No joke. This dog did this on his own. This was actually the last time I saw him. I think I stayed for the weekend and I had folded my blanket up and set it next to my pillow. That dog crawled under the blanket and fell asleep like this.
fun with barney
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010I don’t have much to say, but I do have a cute video to share with you.
Here’s a clip of Barney playing with his new best friend, Uncle Matty (aka our friend Matt who happens to be Mark’s roommate).
barney. the barnster. barnabus stinson. barnold palmer. the barninator.
Monday, May 31st, 2010Barney moved in with me (finally) on Saturday and he’s settled in pretty well …
… as you can see, he’s pretty tired from the move.
Barney Update!
Monday, November 30th, 2009Okay, so not really an update, but some cute pix nonetheless.
My dog, Barney (Barnabus Stinson, II) is currently residing with my parents back home until I move to a dog-friendly place. I would be able to have him here, except he barks. Otherwise, I’m guessing nobody would really mind. But, he’s a big barker. So there’s that.
Anyway, I went home for Thanksgiving and I was kind of worried that Barn would forget who his mama was, but sure enough, he remembered me. He followed me all around the house for the few days I was home and snuggled up with me every night when I went to sleep. I can’t wait to have him with me permanently, but I know my family is enjoying him in the meantime because he’s just a fabulous doggie.
Here are some adorable photos for your enjoyment.
A Legendary Sunday with Barney
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009On Sunday, Kelly and I took Barney for a walk. She’s trying to cross off as many items on her 30-before-30 list and walking a dog was one of them. She’s always had cats, so she never had a chance to walk a dog. Plus, I think she might be scared of bigger dogs (as am I — only when I’m running or when they run up to me out of nowhere — hey, I’m tiny).
So, we went to Wal-Mart and got Barn a sweater (not as fancy as the coat I want to get him from Noodle and Friends). Then came home and suited him up.
And we’re off. Well. Kind of. Somebody had to sniff everything and pee first.
This photo caught me pulling my shirt down and caught Barney at the beginning of a shake. He likes to shake off. A LOT. He stopped several times during our short walk to shake. Propeller ears!
Yay! Kelly walks a dog for the first time ever!
Proof that Kelly likes dogs. Well, at least this one.
We took Barney over to the Drake Stadium and had him meet up with the giant bronze bulldog statue. He was pretty scared at first (that’s a HUGE bulldog!), but I got him to stand on top of the bulldog for a few pictures.
I’m not so sure about this, mom …
All in all, it was a pretty productive dog-walking Sunday.
Barnabus Stinson II
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009I received the most awesome birthday gift ever from my parents. His name is Barney. Barnabus Stinson II. Named after the infamous Barney Stinson, played by one of my favorite celebs, NPH.
The name Barney hadn’t even occurred to me until my friend Kelly suggested it since she had a friend or relative or something with pets named Fred and Barney. AND she said that it would be fitting because of NPH and Barney’s legendary awesomeness.
So it was between Barney and Walter. Barney ultimately won out over Walter.
I took him to a party on Saturday night. There were large dogs there. He wasn’t a fan. But he dealt with it. He almost stole a cookie from Kelly. He snuggled up on the couch and fell asleep though. Totally cute. Everybody loved him (except the pit bull mix that tried to love him but he was not going to have that).
Here’s me and the Swarls (yes. Swarls. look it up) at Erica and Jesse’s on Saturday.
Anyway … my dog is awesome.
Except, he barks.
A lot.
Only when people are gone though. He has abandonment issues (like his mommy). I left him home alone on Sunday for a couple hours. Sure enough, he was still barking when I got back. I left him home on Monday for 4 hours while I went to work. I came back from lunch and there was a note on the door from a polite, but probably pissed-off neighbor asking to get rid of him since he’d been barking for SEVERAL hours straight.
Now, you’re asking, don’t I live in a non-pet-friendly apartment?
Yes. But other people have dogs here. They tend to look the other way unless people complain. But barking. 4 hours straight. That’s not even fair in a pet-friendly place.
So I had to call in the backup plan. My mom and dad have him until I move out, but he’s still MY dog. Mom is sending me a picture of him a day and I can come visit him and talk to him on the phone.
It was only a few days, but that dog just *knew* I was his mommy.
He stayed with my friend Molly on Monday afternoon and she had a pillow and blanket of mine at her place from when I was staying with her. She put out the pillow and blanket and he seemed to calm down and enjoy it because it smelled like me. That dog followed me around everywhere. Such a sweet little loving doggie.
So, when he learns not to flip out when people leave him alone, I’ll get him back. Until then, grandma Deener gets to take care of him (along with her other grandbaby, my niece, who is just as cute).
Here’s today’s photo of Barney:
