Hump Day Blog Love: Smitten Kitchen

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

This week’s humpday blog love goes to a cooking blog that I’ve been drooling over for months. I’ve pinned a ton of recipes for future use.   I’ve made several recipes from this blog and have yet to have one fail or have one not receive rave reviews. [images copyright smitten kitchen]

My favorite recipe on the site?  The chili. Hands down best chili I’ve ever made.  Or had for that matter.

[chili recipe + biscuits]

I also just baked some amazingly fudgy brownies that I’ve been wanting to try for a while.

[best cocoa brownies recipe]

Next up, I’m trying the fresh tomato sauce recipe. I have a load of tomatoes from my grandpa from my adventure last saturday. I’m excited to try this!

Humpday Blog Love: Hatch Design

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Okay, so this is totally cheating since it’s not a blog, but Hatch Design has a totally adorable website and they are having their 4th annual Easter egg coloring contest.

I’m in love with their website, and I just cast my vote. You should too!

Humpday Blog Love: A Love Letter to a New Year

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

This week’s Humpday Blog Love goes to an awesome local lady — the one, the only, Laura Palmer.  Her blog is called “A Love Letter to a New Year“. My favorite recent post is about her fandom of Glee — she even called herself a total GLEEk.

Her blog is dedicated to all things happening in the 27th year of her life. She’s got a list of things she wants to do and she’s out and about tackling it. Laura also makes adorable greetings and sells them on etsy amongst other places. In true diary style, each post starts out with, “Dear 27.”  She’s very entertaining and always has awesome photos and visuals to go with her tales of adventure.

Head on over and check her out. You won’t be disappointed. If you are, then you probably shouldn’t be reading my blog either.

Humpday Blog Love: Iowa Girl Eats

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Wow! It’s been a while since I’ve done a Humpday Blog Love post.

This week’s Humpday Blog Love goes to one of my favorite local ladies: Kristin from Iowa Girl Eats.

Kristin has been on a fabulous vacation in Italy for the last several days (I’m so jealous!), but she is a foodie who’s into being healthy and fit. Her blog includes a lot of recipes, ideas for food combinations, reviews of local (and far-away) restaurants and foods, fabulous traveling escapades and tips for running/walking/working out.  I’m always inspired by her — she’s healthy and fit, but isn’t afraid to eat what she wants — good food is good food.

So thanks for the inspiration, Kristin! Be sure to check out her blog, Iowa Girl Eats.

Humpday Blog Love: Turtle Soup

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

This week’s Humpday Blog love goes to my friend Steph Hertel’s Turtle Soup blog.  Don’t confuse her with the yodeling sensation, Stefanie Hertel.

I don’t even know where to start! Steph is pretty much the perfected version of what I do at my blog … she makes things … creates things … designs things … bakes things … and is pretty amazing at it.  I met Stephanie through ISU’s graphic design program — and she is extremely talented.  She works for Hallmark, which is the most coveted job in our field (or at least in my eyes anyway!)

Here’s a random smattering of lovely things that Steph has created and blogged about … you should go check her out, and don’t forget to leave her some love!

Lovely tote bag Steph created a while back

Um, YUM. Peanut butter cup cookies! Oh yes — and she shares recipes as well.

Zucchini Pasta
Lovely Zucchini pasta

Felt Flower Pin
Seriously — she is a jack of all trades! Adorable felt flower pin …

Cute Onsie
Here’s a closeup of an adorable onesie she made

Designy
Here’s a little taste of some of her great design skills … an invite for her annual cookie party and what I’m guessing is the lovely packaging she created to go with it.

Beautiful Quilt
And … a beautiful quilt.

You must take 5 minutes and check her out! Definitely worth it, unless you don’t like looking at well-designed and yummy things. Then … um … why are you here?

This week’s Blog Love goes to my friend Steph for her blog 33% Disaster.

Steph is a web designer at a local company and does a lot of photography on the side. She’s also getting married to a wonderful guy next May and I’m going to be a bridesmaid in her wedding (all after she got the schpeel about me not wanting to be anybody’s bridesmaid).

Steph writes about lots of things going on in her life and mind. Recently she’s done a lot of book reviews and movie reviews.

She’s also keeping a tumblr blog for her wedding inspiration.  Go over and check her out … and leave some love!

Humpday Blog Love: Failed Feminist

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Love goes to Des Moines local Cara Hall this week and her ironically titled blog, Failed Feminist.

inside out egg rolls

I met Cara last year through Craft Saturday in Des Moines. In her own words, Cara “is a writer in Des Moines, Iowa (which is cooler than you think). And as much as she never expected to, she loves all things Martha. Just try to pry the knitting needles out of her hands. She’s always trying new recipes and DIY projects, and she hopes you’ll try them too. She’s also always working on herself, and there is oh so much work to do.”

I read Cara’s blog for her crafty updates, her dog photos and commentary, but mostly for her recipes. One of my favorites is inside out egg rolls, which is pictured in the screenshot above.

So, check her out. She’s also a fellow Des Moines Register Featured Blogger.

Humpday Blog Love: Designing Daily

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

This week’s installment of Humpday Blog Love is dedicated to Designing Daily, a blog about creativity, inspiration and design’s impact on everyday life. Heidi Miller is the author of this blog.  She’s a fabulous designer and photographer that loves great design, pretty things and has, if I do say so myself, fabulous taste.

I met Heidi in college — she was a fellow ISU design student and we graduated the same year. She lives in the Twin Cities now and just launched Verde Utopia Design. Below is a photo of hers (she took the above as well) and a couple of her fabulous invite designs.

when it rains, it pours

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but when it rains, it pours.

I’ve been kind of complaining about money lately (really, who isn’t?). I’d taken out some extra flex dollars this year to pay for physical therapy, so my paychecks are $100 less each month. I also bought a car, which means I’ve got a $200 bill each month after insurance. So anyway, things are a bit tighter than I anticipated. I hadn’t banked on the $100 less on my paycheck. I realize that I’ve also been really dependent upon freelance and crafting for some extra income.

Anyway, somebody upstairs (or downstairs, or somebodies, or somebody who doesn’t exist at all — depending on your religious beliefs) was paying attention because fortune has smiled down upon me.

Not everything will pan out right away, but once things do, I will be sitting pretty, or more comfortably at least.

First, a local law firm asked me to redesign their logo, letterhead, business cards and other business materials. Possibly a website.  They are a serious client (yay!) and are willing to compensate me for my work.  This is exciting as many people don’t value design enough to seek out a talented professional and pay them what they’re worth.  Anyway, I sent them an estimate and contract and I’m just waiting to hear back to start. Should be an interesting endeavor!  Something different from most law firms, so it’s very exciting for me to be able to help them out and brand them.

Also, I’ve been working on a website for my friend Kim’s friend, Lisa.  I’ve put the bare bones together and I just have to work through all the technical stuff (you know, the hard part!) … and then we’ll be off and running. :) She has really amazing work, so I’m glad to be able to help her on this project.  She’s my first official BIG paying freelance job, so I was very thankful for that.  Most freelance stuff I’ve done has been pretty small, so I was excited for this opportunity. Plus, I love helping out the artist community.

AND I found a few other art/craft shows to participate in the next few months.

First — Relish the Hellish. This is going to be way cool. I’ll be able to sell some of my rock/punk/dark stuff here (I don’t usually at Market Day).  It’s basically an art/music event held at a local tattoo shop.  There’s going to be a lot of local vendors there, and I’m especially excited because Sew Zinski is going to be there (I blogged about her awesome work a while back) so I’ll finally get to meet her in person. We’ve been tweeting back and forth and I hear things about her (and vice versa) from my co-worker.  She seems like a cool cat.

Anywho — Relish the Hellish is the SAME DAY as Market Day!! Eep. Oh well. I’ve got it under control!

The other craft show is actually in my neighborhood — I’ll have more details later — but it’s the same day as Market Day in September! This one’s even crazier because there’s only an hour between events… I might need some help for this one!

ALSO, I won two blog giveaways today!! Wow.

Crazy.

I will blog more about the giveaways, Relish the Hellish and the other craft show! Right now, I’ve got to get headed to bed.
