Humpday Blog Love: A Whoopdedoo Life

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

This week’s humpday blog love goes to my friend Adria, who ironically thinks I’m mad at her because I haven’t had a chance to talk to her for a couple weeks. But no, I am not! And I realized my blog love post was about her blog this week (I schedule them all in advance) — so I’ve edited to include this blurb!

Anyway, my friend Adria and I go way back — all the way to 7th grade when she came to my school. That’s right. MY school.

Adria is SUPER crafty and she’s the one that got me into quilting and sewing last year.  She and I also went through terrible breakups at about this time last year and are both with fabulous men currently. She also has a weiner dog … well, he’s a chiweenie-min pin mix — McGruff!

Here are some of the fabulous things she makes … I’m lucky enough to get a lot of her fabric scraps, which is how I’ve made such lovely things on the cheap.

So you should probably go check her out, and leave her some lovin’!

helloooooo betty!

I can’t ever wait until a project is completely finished OR until I have good pictures of it…I guess I’m super impatient (how I do quilting…don’t ask!)…

I’ve been hoarding this jelly roll of Hello Betty fabric for over a month. I’ve been looking for an easy pattern for a jelly roll (since it’s pre-cut into 3ish” strips).  I decided on a rail fence pattern…super easy! (also, did I mention that pretty much all quilting websites and fabric websites look and navigate like they were made in the mid–late nineties??)

Anywho, I got to work and finished the top. There’s a couple of crooked areas, but I zipped through it because I knew if I had to put it down then I wouldn’t finish it!  I had a few block parts leftover and one entire strip of the checkerboard in brown (I hate the checkerboard fabric!)…so I made a pillow for my friend Adria out of those.  I had 2 full blocks leftover, so I’m going to make 1–2 pillows out of that.

This quilt is for my mom who likes these retro fabrics (heck, granny used the original version of some of these in a quilt we have at home!) and she loves browns with blues and oranges and pretty much browns with anything.

Anyway, here are a few really crappy photos of what I’ve got. I will post better ones later… when the thing is finished. I need to get batteries for my camera (aka find my rechargables!).

the colors are really off because my flash wasn't working...but this is a better picture.

again, colors are off. It's more of a red orange and the green is more turquoise...it's brown, not black too!

I’m planning to use the above fabric as the backing piece…not cheap, but I have to buy 4 or so yards of it, and fast! I can only find this in one store, and I LOVE this one! I’m also going to do a 4-inch cream border on the front of this quilt and I haven’t decided what the binding will be… most likely it’s going to be that solid red/orange, which I will also have to buy up rather quickly!

Also, here’s the pillow I made…. I need to finish the seam on the side where I stuffed it, but like I said…I can never wait to post projects!

Hello Betty Pillow

I also cut most of the fabric and pinned most of my mermaid bags tonight… yay!

andddd…. SLEEP!

lil zipper bag!

last night I decided to get the sewing machine out in the first time in a long time! (yay! I love sewing!)  I haven’t had time to sew in the past few weeks because I was getting ready for Market Day, which was especially sad because my friend Adria had just given me two HUGE bags of stash fabric and some scraps from her mermaid quilt. I’ve been pining over my sewing machine.

Anywho… me and the sewing machine totally hung out last night.

I’v e been wanting to make this bag ever since I discovered the moda bake shop last week (thanks to Adria, of course). For those of you who don’t know what Moda is…it’s a fabric manufacturer. The bake shop gives “recipes” for different things to do with their fabric. Kind of self-serving…but hey, they have incredible step-by-step tutorials, so I love it!

I got out the scraps from Adria’s mermaid quilt last night, a chunk of yellow fabric and some felt stuff that I figured would work just fine for “batting” since I’m not really making a quilt…and went to town.  It was pretty fun. All the while I was watching Sixteen Candles on Encore. :D

Here’s what I came up with so far. Nothing too exciting. I need to go get some zippers and some more batting material so I can finish these. I have enough fabric to make a ton of these…but I was planning to make one for my mom and all my girlfriends. Although, I don’t know if they all like pink as much as I do. ;)

Mermaid lil zipper bag

backside — will be inside of bag (look at that quilting!)

Oh, um, did I mention this piece was my FIRST ATTEMPT AT QUILTING???? eeeee!  It went pretty well. I don’t have a walking foot, but I’m going to get one now. I totally think I could quilt my hardcore quilt top!

That is all.
