Sweet Tunes Thursday: The Cars

The Cars released a new album on Tuesday, and I am REALLY excited.

Here’s one of my favorite songs of theirs:

Night of the Living Prom!

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Are you ready for this awesomeness?

Every year Ames has a throwback prom to raise money for American Cancer Society and this year’s theme was Night of the Living Prom. Zombies. Prom. Zombies. Prom. Prombies?

Of course, I had to cram myself into this awesome black dress I bought for last year’s prom that isn’t made to actually fit a human being. It’s a size … ?? I don’t know. 28 inch waist with 24 inches for a chest? Hmm.. yeah. I turned the back into the corset and laced it up to fit me. Frankensteined a dress for zombie prom.

Mark and I decided to do 80s glam punk — Billy Idol style. I made Mark a shirt out of a PBR t-shirt and some fabric scraps. And of course, I made us a corsage and a boutonniere.

It was a good mix of zombies and prom goers. We had a fabulous time. The band showed up in Ghostbusters costumes (complete with proton packs) and played the ghostbusters song! Thriller was played halfway through the night and a group of us danced to it. I didn’t learn it, but I jumped in and improved anyway.

That’s about it. Free beer and punch. Lots of dancing. Lots of fun times. Undead. And alive.

Here are some pix!

corsages for Revenge of the prom!

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

I’m totally lazy so I’m just going to literally copy and paste what I just posted on crafster.org. also, i want ice cream…so I’m going to make this quick.

I made some corsages tonight for Kelly and I to wear tomorrow night at Revenge of the Prom.

Fancy.

We have totally awesome dresses from our rad 80′s new years party and thought we could get a 2nd use out of them and get another chance to wear some big hair and side ponytails.  Smiley

I ventured to Hobby Lobby and got a bunch of supplies (flower stems happened to be on sale for 50% off!)….roses, beads, black tulle with glitter, elastic, hot glue gun, floral shears and some floral tape.

Here’s what I ended up with after a half hour of tinkering:

craappy camera. seriously, i swear, i'm getting a point-and-shoot someday...

craappy camera. seriously, i swear, i'm getting a point-and-shoot someday...

I figured out where I wanted the roses to set and I taped them with floral tape (which, by the way, is kind of rough to use if you’ve never used it before–it sticks to itself, but don’t pull too hard or it’s going to break!).  Then I cut the bottoms off with the shears and wrapped the wire parts with floral tape so they wouldn’t poke me. I bent the stem I created by taping in half and moved the flowers around a bit to figure out how they would look on my wrist.  Then I glued some leaves in (there weren’t any leaves that close to the flower, so I pulled them off and placed them).  I took some of the black tulle and kind of balled it up and glued that to the bottom of the whole thing.  Then I took a strip of elastic (that I measured around my wrist), sewed it together so it was secure, and sewed it to the bottom of the corsage-in-the-works.  THEN I glued it down to make sure it would stay.

Exciting.  Not exactly rocket science, but it was fun to pick up something I don’t normally do. I’m usually on the knitting board or lurking on the cooking board.

Also, I plan to post some action shots of the corsages at the event after it happens. I’m EXCITED!

Party Like it’s 1985 NYE Partay

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

FINALLY.

Lack of internet kinda hurts my blogging. In the next few months I’m going to decide between internet and cable or an iPhone. I’m thinking the iPhone will win since I don’t watch much TV and if I reaaaalllly need to blog I can go to Mars Cafe, to the library or do it over lunch at work.

anywho… Kelly posted pics from the awesome totally 80s NYE party.  And they’re awesome.  I need to buy a point and shoot camera, but I’m trying to revamp my budget right now to allow for an iPhone or internet/cable.

Okay no more mentions of budgets or iPhones. BLOGGING.

The party was pretty fun, but as per usual we kind of petered out around 11 PM. I went to Kelly’s to help setup. While she was cleaning, I put up the backdrop for the “official” prom photos.

Kelly got most of that fabric from work...blue tulle was from Senior Portfolio night almost 2 years ago.

Anyway, backdrop was awesome.  Kelly and I started getting ready. Since I recently just chopped off my hair, my hair style consisted of me flipping my head upside down and spraying the living bejesus out of a can of hairspray all over it.  Kelly opted for a side pony with the same treatment and some crimping.  I overdid our eyeshadow (Maria’s BF, Marty, said Kelly’s looked “postapocolyptic”…like Mad Max style)…I think we both ended up with 4-5 shades of eyeshadow and some black eyeliner. Awesomeness.

People starting arriving and changing into their attire… with exception of Meredith who was literally sewn into her dress because somebody had been sewn in and cut out of it previously.  Awesome.  Oh, and Maria came already dressed because that’s how she rolls. :)   Carol had 2 dresses so she did photos in both, as did I.  Although, I couldn’t quite zip the one dress (and by couldn’t quite, I mean there was a 4-inch gap).

Anyway, party ensued. Everybody mixed their drinks and I did 4 shots of tequila rose (I feel like I’ve mentioned that before…I’m not a big drinker, so I guess I’m proud). Kelly and I opened a bottle of raspberry wine, which wasn’t very good…so she opened her one of 2 bottles of her favorite wine and we each had a glass of that.  I had a glass of champagne around midnight and spilled some of each of my drinks on my dress (which now needs to be dry cleaned).

Most of the night was spent arguing over whether Carol should move to Iowa or Texas. I think Iowa, but hell, I’d love to move to TX myself where it’s warm most of the year and where I can wear my hair as big as I please all year round…oh and drive a friggin’ truck.

Anyway, good times had by all. Music was good.  Friends were great. I even got a kiss at midnight.  Reluctantly by the boyfriend since he’s super allergic to felines and Kelly’s apartment still had a layer of cat fur embedded after vacuuming..so it was kind of a snotty New Year’s kiss. Oh well. I was drunk, so I didn’t care.

Anyway, here are some gratuitous photos of us from our 80s prom.

notice the postapocolyptic eyeshadow. Oh, and the awesome bow.

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

It’s New Year’s day, it’s glorious outside but I feel kinda crappy from a little bit too much to drink last night. Oops. Maybe shouldn’t have started the evening out with 4 shots of tequila rose (hey, it’s pink).

I’ve been up since about 11 AM and I thought I’d be nice and let the bf sleep in since he hardly ever gets to do so. Well, it’s almost 3PM and he’s still sleeping.

So far this morning I’ve done my normal rounds on the internet (check e-mail, facebook, mint.com, craftster.org, read feeds on google reader and general surfing), blogged, organized my bookmarks and printed several of them to PDFs to further organize things and make them accessable offline (mostly recipes and knitting/craft patterns/ideas)…and now I’m converting my holiday e-card to video so I can post it here as my “2008 recap” since that seems to be a popular subject with my friends who blog.

Also, I’ve had 3 cups of tea and probably about 5 peanutbutter balls.

And I’m still waiting for my friend Kelly to post her pix from our party last night on facebook.  I think she’s been working on her 2008 recap post.

Anyway, here’s some randoms I took with Photobooth from last night…and the morning after. Nothing too exciting. I reaaaallly need to get myself a point and shoot to replace my clunky one that’s about 6 years old.  I hate carting around my big/good camera so I just never bring one. :/  In case you were wondering I had my computer w/ me last night BECAUSE I needed to edit down our final playlist. :)

And finally, just thought you’d like to know I just typed “www.amazon.co,” 4 times before correctly typing “www.amazon.com”.  Happy New Year.  #FAIL

Hi. My name is Calee, and I’m an e-bayaholic.

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

I thought I got over this Freshman or Sophomore year of college, but somehow, I managed to find my way back.

I used to have a real problem with buying stuff on e-bay.  ALL the time. Mostly funky fashion finds, like my leopard print boots.

wellllll i wanted a new dress for our 80s party, and I started looking around e-bay. I found this kickass seller, bleubird vintage, on e-bay and kind of went to town on all its items. i figured i’d get outbid, but miraculously, i won all the things except one (which I purposely kept low because i realized i really didn’t want it after i placed the first bid).

so now i’ve got 2 dresses for our party.

here are all the things i’ve won… (i wonder if any will even look good on me… )

party like it’s 1985

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

a while back my girlies and i talked about having a formal new years party like i had a few years back. the other girls have bridesmaids dresses they were planning to wear, but i don’t really have anything but prom dresses from high school… so i thought it’d be fun to look for a vintage dress (circa 1985) on e-bay.

i tossed a few dress ideas to the girls and we all decided to have an 80s new years party. so now everybody’s in on the fun.

My awesome e-bay finding for our 80s New Year's Party

My awesome e-bay finding for our 80s New Year

i won this totally awesome “calee pink” dress–no bows or sequins, but there are definitely ruffles.  here’s a pic for those of you too lazy to click. ;)

i didn’t mention that i didn’t even win this dress on my own. the e-bay auction ended at 5:30 PM…and I left work to go home for Thanksgiving at 4 PM, so obviously, i had to enlist the help of one of my girlies.  muh friend kelly ended up placing the winning bid after watching the dress all day and refreshing the page endlessly… well, until 5:30.  then she called me right away to let me know i won. gee, what else are friends for? haha, i’ve already changed my password back, so no iPhones or HDTVs for kelly!

(i’ve spent the entire night doing laundry (11 flipping loads… 2 more left to go) and creating the perfect playlist for the evening… David Bowie, Bow Wow Wow, The GoGos, Michael Jackson, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Queen, Metallica, Motley Crue, Cinderella, The Bangles, B-52s, Sinead O’Conner, Prince, Oingo Boingo, Boston, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Foriegner, Journey, The Motels, The Waitresses, Huey Lewis and the News, Men at Work, Duran Duran, New Order, Depeche Mode, Men Without Hats, Rick Springfield, Milli Vanilli, Rick James, Robert Palmer, Roxette, Nena, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Roxette, Patrick Swayze, Wang Chung, The Vapors, The Clash, The Pretenders, Paula Abdul, Whitney Houston….. and of course… [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0].

it’s 2:19 a.m. here

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

haven’t seen that time for a while.

i’m up cuz i’m doing laundry… not the most glamorous thing in the world. 11 loads total — 3 left to go. w00t.

homes for thanksgiving — took the day off tomorrow (thank goodness cuz i’m up doin laundry!). hopefully i can get some sleep in tomorrow…but who knows. not sure what all the deener has planned and emee will probably be up and letting us all know she’s awake tomorrow (or in just a few hours more likely).

sometime last week i decided to move this blog from runningchimes.blogspot.com to runningchimes.wordpress.com. ideally i’ll have my own blog on my own site, but i’ve got to build my own site first… and who knows when that’s going to happen. i’m kinda swamped at work now and i’ve got a couple of freebie freelance projects i’ve promised ppl (why I do that… I don’t know).

anywho, this blog isn’t going to just be a bunch of running graphs and nerdy spandex, shoe and gadget talk.  although, i’m not going to promise there won’t be any nerdy design talk… yeah. this blog is a little bit more about life than the other one.

the sole purpose for the original blog was to get me excited for the des moines marathon and create awareness that i was training. basically, without that blog, i probably wouldn’t have ran the marathon. sad how technology impacts our lives. if i didn’t have something holding me accountable, then i wouldn’t have done it (kind of like the rest of my life).

which brings me here. if i blog about my goals, does that mean maybe i’ll achieve them?  well only time will tell.

ok one thing i do miss about blogger is the foxytunes signature insert.. :/

well for anybody who cares, i’m listening to a bunch of 80s music that i’ve been downloading in  preparation for our Party Like it’s 1985 new year’s party… which is going to rock. bloggity blog blog blog to come.
